St Ives, Cornwall

Each year Clare and I drive down to Devon and Cornwall for a few days by the sea. It’s something we both did a lot with our families as kids and something I hope we’ll keep doing over the years. This year we stayed at the Boskerris Hotel in Carbis Bay, just around the corner from St. Ives – and just up from a little train station on the St. Ives Bay Line that runs between St. Ives and St. Erth. There is also a coastal path that we walked to St. Ives on the Saturday morning, with great views out to sea. The weather was particularly stormy on the Friday when we arrived, but it soon cleared to give us a very sunny weekend.

The hotel was wonderful – it had recently been refurbished and offered fantastic views of Carbis Bay. We spent many evenings sat on the terrace with gin & tonics before making the short train journey into St. Ives for dinner. The breakfasts at the hotel was the best we’d had – so good, in fact, that we visited the local farm shop where the hotel’s bacon and sausages were from and brought some home with us!

On the Saturday afternoon we drove over to ‘Lizard Point’ and walked the coastal paths down to Kynance Cove – amazing views! I’d certainly recommend taking a visit if you’re ever down that way. In the evening we caught the train back into St. Ives for dinner at Porthminster Beach Café that sits right on the beach and offers great food and cocktails – something else I’d also recommend trying in St. Ives.

On the Sunday we spent the day on the beach making the most of the British summer – before heading back to the hotel for a Cornish Cream Tea (and a few ciders!).

St. Ives is a great little fishing town – it can get really busy through the day, but we walked the harbor wall in the evening and the crowds had all gone – only the last fishermen stowing their days catch – and a chap from the local kayak football team practicing in the harbor. We can’t wait to go back next year!
